Glacier National Park - Trans Canada Highway

Avalanche Mitigation

Snownets installed by Dynamic Avalanche Consulting as avalanche protection on a snowy mountainside above the Trans Canada Highway in Glacier National Park
Description of the Project

The Trans-Canada Highway Avalanche Mitigation Project for Glacier National Park aims to reduce avalanche risk to highway users and workers, reduce closure time, and optimize the efficiency of current avalanche risk management operations. A systematic evaluation process was used to identify and select avalanche mitigation projects to achieve these goals. Selected mitigation projects included installation of 1,886 m of snow retention nets, installation of 13 remote avalanche control systems (RACS), construction of a 19.5 m high retaining berm, and installation of a comprehensive avalanche detection network which consists of 13 infrasound arrays and 4 radar units. Dynamic provided critical conceptual information to design various mitigation projects, delivered design specifications for each project, and is retained to provide consultation during the ongoing construction, scheduled for completion during the summer of 2020.
