MINE SITE REMEDIATION: CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION
The Holden Mine Remediation Project is a multi-million dollar effort to clean up contaminants from the Howe Sound Holden Mine era (1937-57). The project included winter construction, and subsequent operation of a water treatment plant to remove contaminants from tailings groundwater.
Challenges
- Post-wildfire landscape increased uncertainty of avalanche risk.
- Over 60 personnel were exposed to snow avalanche hazards on access roads and at worksites during the construction phase.
- Maintenance facilities exposed to avalanche hazard.
- Multi-stakeholder interest in the project.
- Water treatment plant operation continues year- round, requiring a high degree of reliability, despite access roads being affected by avalanche hazards.
Successes
- Completed avalanche risk assessment for post- wildfire landscape.
