MINING EXPLORATION
The Macpass Project is host to large zinc-lead-silver deposits. Fireweed Metals is advancing this project through exploration, resource definition, engineering and economic studies on the path to production.
Challenges
Roads and facilities are exposed to avalanche hazard in complex alpine terrain.
The exploration season was limited by the duration of the avalanche hazard season within the project area.
Exploration activities in remote, alpine areas with potential exposure to avalanche terrain required detailed avalanche risk assessment.
Successes
A detailed avalanche risk assessment was completed for the project using modern methods, including field reviews, avalanche modelling and detailed avalanche hazard mapping.
Avalanche forecasting and hazard reduction with explosives has reduced safety risks and extended the exploration season.
Engineering analysis and planning has resulted in the relocation of assets to areas not affected by avalanche hazards.
Facility relocation outside of avalanche terrain which improves year-round access.
